team goals
Collaboration, mutual respect, problem solving, and shared views and beliefs are core values of a successful community, where everyone lives peacefully side by side. Belonging and cohesion are the fabric of society, and learning to successfully interact with others, even just a select few, is important for childrenâs development. Working within teams develops listening and leadership skills as well as confidence, empathy, and compassion for others. These are all skills we want to nurture within our children, as they learn to successfully navigate and shape the world.
Children develop understandings of teams from their own âtribesâ at home. What children see and experience contributes to successful development of co-operation and team-building skills. Everyday activities and routines develop community skills in our children. At home we can develop these at a basic level through family rules, rotas, and responsibilities, reinforcing the notion of collective responsibility. We can teach children to follow rules by linking jobs to rewards such as reward charts or Special Time â dedicated, planned family time together. Typically, children will be motivated when they have a say in choosing rewards!
Gardening and washing dishes can be supported tasks for young children or independent jobs for teens. Itâs important that children understand the value of keeping living spaces reasonably tidy, including bedrooms. Even very young children can help by sorting rubbish for recycling. From preschool to teen, every child can have a role, purpose, and function, creating a sense of belonging.
You can also work as a family unit to help others through your choices and actions. Encourage children to donate unwanted clothing and toys to charity, explaining why we recycle to help disadvantaged children and families. Shop with your child and buy ethically, explaining your choices: for example, how buying fairtrade contributes to social justice, ensuring that traders across the world, including some of the most vulnerable, are treated fairly and not discriminated against.
âChildren acquire essential skills from teamwork, as they connect and work to achieve common goalsâ
